According to the American Thyroid Association, women are five to eight times more likely than men to be diagnosed with thyroid disease. Since two of the most common Thyroid conditions, Graves’ Disease and Hashimoto’s are autoimmune in nature, their symptoms may often be confused with other health problems, which can make reaching a diagnosis for some, a long and puzzling process.

We are joined by Dr. Mark Lupo, Medical Director of the Thyroid & Endocrine Center of Florida, to discuss the diagnostic journey, the symptoms, the risks and how, due to advances in testing, one result just might provide the missing piece you’ve been looking for.

  1. I’m a man and Diagnose with hyperthyroidism. I’m treated now, I feel like I’m getting my life back slowly

  2. In 1983 I had my first baby, three years later by chance by a GP who had also had it as a medical student, I was diagnosed with Graves’ disease and admitted to hospital for three weeks it was chronic and took a long time to stabilise and bring my heart rate down. I then also suffered with one eye enlargement my weight dropped significantly my anxiety, panic attacks and hands shook, my heart rate and muscle strength was extreme. In 1994 I had my fourth baby and had post natal depression. By 1995 graves returned each time after each three more babies. After my fourth baby the doctor thought I should stop breast feeding and take anti depressants and thyroid disease medication. That made me feel even worse.
By 1998 my thyroid symptoms were recurring. Then by 2008 after a lot of stress, anxiety and depression my hyperthyroidism turned into Hashimoto hypothyroidism. At 58 I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia another under diagnosed condition I’d lived with symptoms since I was a child.
All in all I have lived with autoimmune disease both hyper and hypo for 38 years. At 63 I still suffer with symptoms trying to regulate and adjust my medication is tricky. Taking thyroxine doesn’t cure the disease it treats the disease and controls it but is volatile, hormone changes, viruses, menopause, periods all affect dose and the impact and changes can take time to show up in a blood test or not show up. It is a fickle and insidious disease.
To live a life with your body under constant attack is hard. I took up qigong, practice yoga and Pilates, lift weights, walk, meditate practice mindfulness and went vegetarian then vegan three years ago, I eat very low gluten, grains or high glycemic carbs, low sugar and fast. It’s a lifestyle change and a constant battle.
My experience’s with the medical profession has been a struggle, ignorance, tunnel vision and stupid comments.
My advice is do as much research for yourself and try, try and try again. Stress is a killer so be aware of how to combat it. Lifestyle past, present and future all need to be factored into your personal journey. Wellness is mind and body listen to what both are telling you. Look in the mirror and love yourself 💜

  3. "cause unknown" – the antibodies are the cause. Then ask how do we have so many more antibodies compared to previous generations? Such a mystery.

  4. I couldn't find a good endocrinologist who will listen and investigate. They just think I'm vain coz I'm losing my hair..then refer me to a derma 🥺

  5. Hello Ereka!
Im suffering from this disease and Im afraid to have an operation. But now there are lots of complications like hearing malfunction, my right ear is 60% damaged, I have numbness of my right head, back pain especially on the right side, numbness everywhere but more on my hands and legs. Lately I experience pain in my throat everytime I speak and I feel so drain and much fatigue.

  6. This was true in my case. I had normal TSH but odd symptoms that seemed like I had gallbladder disease. But I didn’t. Thankfully the doctor did a thyroid peroxidase antibody test and it was quite elevated. I had Hashimoto’s and needed daily medication, and within about 48 hours almost all digestive problems stopped. The thyroid controls a lot of things.

  7. SAD, THE EXPERTS ONLY TALK ABOUT
T R E A T M E N T S, NOT CURES. NOTICIE THEY NEVER WANT A CURE, BECAUSE THERE IS MORE 💰💰 TO BE MADE IN TREATMENTS. WE ARE BEING LIED TO CONSTANTLY BY BIG PHARMA.

  8. It took me 28 years to be diagnosed with hashimotos disease. It wasn’t until I paid to have a series of ultrasounds done at a health fair in Florida that they turned up nodules on my thyroid. My doctor ignored the first report and three years later I had another set of tests in Florida and my nodule had increased in size. My doctor then ordered the whole battery of tests that showed I had an autoimmune disorder. Three years later I had my thyroid and parathyroid glands removed. I had previously talked to my doctor about my heart palpitations and she put me on blood pressure pills. I have found that doctors have little to no knowledge of autoimmune disorders. You must be your own advocate and do your own research.

  9. Anxiety and depression, chronic exhaustion, palpitations, panic attacks, profuse sweating, fuzzy brain, lack of sleep and muscle weakness were my first symptoms,

  10. OMG I have constant anxiety. I can never relax! This started precisely when I started getting eczema on my face. This has to be autoimmune.

  11. I’m just amazed that doctors DO NOT do all the tests for your thyroid when there’s obviously a problem. So many health problems could be fixed or helped with simple tests!😔💔😔

  12. I ate a hamburger and bun one day. Felt very dizzy. Went to ob-gyn. He suspected hypothyroidism. Moved to Dallas area. Some endocrinologist stuck about 6 needles in my neck to do a biopsy. Welcome to Texas and their backwards medical system. Nothing but a huge headache. Twenty years later. Still fighting horrible doctors without a clue. Wish I stayed in Chicago sometimes.

  13. Rajshree, hello, I got Hashimoto , my TPO are very high, above 1000, I got a question, I also have a very low grade of fatty liver, the conversion from T 4 to T3 is in the liver . Would that be the reason why I dont feel an improvement in my affection. have also been diagnosed with IBS,, I live in Ecuador, S A, medicine is not as advanced as in the US. As a matter of factct my doctor did not mention anything about my TPO. He only gave me 50 mcg of Eutiros in Spanish. I am Very skkiny instead of overweigth , a rare case in hypotiroidism.Latety I have constant cold temperature in my body. Supecte have bad absortion on nutrients. I am really confused. The worse thing is that I eat a lot and dont get any weigth. Your page is brilliant. Hope maybe in short time get some medicine from you. I have been taking <Selenium and dont get results yet. Maybe those suplements are not that strog… Hope you can give some idea….Edmundo

  14. I have now started listening to my body, and take my medication as necessary. I don't take them all the time. Our bodies change, and these things can correct themselves, so I take every day as it comes now, and have my symptoms under control, with a change in my diet, and reduce meat, so far so good.

  15. Think they know but waits for more symptoms to treat .just heard of b.results after many years .I do not=take meds nor trust the uk. Nhs will not take any meds .as know they increase symptoms

  16. I suffered for YEARS unfortunately because….the symptoms I had at the beginning were chalked up to other things.
    I now have Hashimoto’s.
My thyroid right now is swollen about 3x the size it should be. I’m fatigued, depressed, short-tempered (unlike me!), anxiety, weight gain (no reason) choppy night sleep, dry flaky skin, joint stiffness, extra aches&pains, no energy, no motivation, sallow complexion, cold much of the time….too much to write out. I developed Hashimoto’s AFTER cancer treatment. Chemotherapy/Cisplatin and 30 external radiation and 5 brachytherapy. It’s a constant battle to feel like living. Chronic nerve pain on top of all of this. Plus recent big toe amputation from blood clot.

  17. 49 years of ‘suffering’ from thyroid disease, I’m just fed-up and totally exhausted from going from so-called professionals to professionals who haven’t helped me in any way! (I’ve had diarrhea for 49 years, since the first day of taking the thyroid medication!!!).
I’m not sure I can handle this much longer, exhaustion to the point I can’t stay away for almost 18+ hours every day, but diarrhea 24/7 is killing me.
What can you do when a medical‘professional’ tells you, ‘I was never taught to test for TSH3!’ Year after year, 10+ years of just that line, how are they allowed to treat anyone medical? WTH? (I’m blessed my hubby is exceptionally understanding, he’s taken over everything but the housekeeping.
Going to yet another g.p. the end of this month, I’m sure nothing will change nor improve for me!

I’m just waiting to die at this time, I am leaving my body for medical research, I hope it will help someone as nothing has helped me! I can’t do this any more.

  18. Contact Doctor Okoromi on YouTube he got the best treatment for thyroid disease within 3 weeks😢😢😢💖😢👋👋💖☪️😢💖

  19. The sad thing is that the doctors don't understand that when someone has an autoimmune disorder no matter where you have it, it affects their entire body. Since when are immune cells restricted to just certain parts of the body. They all need to get on the same page.

  20. There is something that everyone can do that really does work because I am 53 years old and I have post menopause and thyroid issues those symptoms I do not have anymore since I've been taking doctor acts hormonal imbalance supplement

  21. And what also works is the lemon peels in the orange pails and a little bit of honey and a little bit of cinnamon and boil them in a pot the pills have more vitamins in them than the inside of the orange and the lemon

  22. Iodine needs to be added to diet, kelp supplements helps as does Iodine salt…have had thyroid since teens now am late 60s…I'm just now starting to understand my condition thanks to social media…it is and has been a lifetime problem for me…a working thyroid for a woman is extremely important, other organs work overtime to pick up the slack leading to other health problems

  23. I have thruway to and go to my ducter and he told me that go back to him on the 11_28of2022thay didn't call back to go back to them so I have to call them back.

  24. I am almost 65 & only recently discovered that illnesses such as thyroid disease are often caused by narcissistic abuse. This very well could have been the case, & cause, for my condition. I was born into a family of complete narcissistic vampires & suffered the garbage they threw at me for some 60 years, (as they started early on the "baby"). I am in process of researching this presently. I've dealt with copious amounts of anxiety coming from a "battle royal" home life. Always physically healthy, it all hit in my later years & I'm far from being healthy now. The medical doctors are useless, for the most part. I have quite distanced my self from the narcissistic vampire relatives as well as so called friends. I live alone; much better than having to be in a constant battle with abusers. I also suffer IBS, acid reflux, & other disorders. If any of you have abusive relatives, get rid of them NOW & never be with them again. Your heart, mind, body, & even your inner spirit will thank you for it, although you have to continue to fight the disease within. And, yes, I have PTSD, too. But, this is possibly the beginning of a healing journey.🙏

  26. Thank you for this piece. I have an appointment this month and I wish I’d seen this MUCH closer to the release date (4yrs ago).

  27. Everyone thought I was prone to depression because of how I experienced my traumatic childhood. It was also a Thyroid Condition. Not one doctor I saw, checked me for that. Not one. Right away, I was prescribed anti depressants.
