we’re small enough she thought as all her corners disappeared into the darkness.

everything soft and ripe inside of us. as we pretend to understand each other. 

the beginning a balloon suddenly popped. the end a bone gnawed on by want.

the miles tempting their curious drug. as she chased a distance that could never be caught. 

her body hard against the journey. her voice cancelled by the wind. 

farther sold its promises. in heavy vials of empty poison. the beautiful sickness of skin and delusion. 

we gathered our ink. diligent soldiers in a war with ourselves. 

we like to think the monsters are the enemy. even though they come from within.
