I’m about to share my secret for having such good skin, very few wrinkles and overall good health. My smoothie! I drink it every day because I can tell the difference in the way my complexion looks and the way my joints feel when I don’t drink it.
The following recipe is for six smoothies that are loaded with collagen and other super foods. Besides being extraordinarily good for you, it is also quite delicious.
I find it much easier to make five or six smoothies at a time rather than messing up my blender every day. But you could use this recipe to make one smoothie, or you can do as I do and make six smoothies at a time as they will keep for a week.
In a large blender combine:
- 1 8 oz. can organic coconut milk (preferably no Guar gum added.) You can substitute any organic milk such as almond, cashew or even raw grass-fed cows or goat milk.
- 1- quart fresh organic strawberries
- 1 cup frozen spinach or Kale
- 1 cup frozen raspberries
- 1 cup frozen Aronia berries*
- 1 or 2 tbsp‘s apple cider vinegar
For the following items use the amount listed on the back of the package for six servings. So for example, if a serving size is one scoop, then use six scoops. Likewise, if a serving size is 1 teaspoon, then use 6 teaspoons. Depending upon which product you buy the serving sizes could vary. The idea is to base the number upon how many smoothies you are making.
- Kakadu Plum powder – vitamin C*
- Camu Camu powder – vitamin C* (optional with Kakadu plum powder or use instead)
- Açaí (optional with Aronia berries or use instead)
Put all ingredients in a large blender and blend until smooth adding enough filtered water for a consistency that you like. I usually add about another 8 ounces of alkaline water.
Pour smoothies into small mason jars, put on a tight lid and store in the refrigerator until you are ready to use them. They last a week especially if you use the apple cider vinegar or a squeeze of lemon.
I want to let you in on the value of a few of the ingredients.
*Let’s start with the grass-fed collagen. Joint pain and inflammation are the two things we notice as we age that are tied to collagen production, which declines. Collagen also promotes good gut health by healing a leaky gut. I use Garden of Life Collagen.
The thing I love the most about collagen though is what it does for my skin and nails. Ok, I know, health before beauty, but I simply love the way it makes my skin look. It offers other important benefits as well. For those trying to lose weight, it reduces hunger by increasing levels of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), an important hormone that controls hunger and appetite. Finally, it also strengthens bones as it provides copper, an important mineral for bone health.
*Aronia berries are a powerful antioxidant, I call them the ”new” Acai berries.
*Hyaluronic acid is another favorite of mine in terms of what it does for the skin. In the human body, hyaluronic acid is found in the greatest concentrations in the skin, inside joints, within the eye sockets and in other tissues where it helps retain collagen, increase moisture, and provide elasticity and flexibility. All good things.
*Next is the Kakadu Plum, which is as amazing a source of vitamin C as you will ever find. In fact, according to the Australian Government’s Rural Industries Research and Development Corp., the Kakadu plum has the “highest recorded level of natural vitamin C content of any plant in the world — more than 100 times that of an orange.”
Because it contains so much C, it provides even more antioxidants than the blueberry, making it one of the most remarkably high antioxidant foods on Earth. Kakadu Plum packs quite a punch compared to the amazing blueberry, providing 4.7 times more phenolic compounds and 10 times more potassium.
It is easy to deplete the body of Vitamin C. We do that by smoking, drinking, or stressing out. Even endurance sports deplete vitamin C. Kakadu Plum is an amazing way to load up on your vitamin C. But that’s not all vitamin C does, it lowers the risk of cardiovascular disease, of Alzheimer’s and it also reduces the appearance of wrinkles! Yay. Finally, it protects the immune system. It is one of the first vitamins to go if we don’t take care of ourselves, so finding such a rich source of vitamin C is truly amazing.
MSM is another super supplement that can lower inflammation, fight the effects of stress and pain, raise immunity, and increase energy levels.
*Camu Camu is another source of high levels of vitamin C, not as hard to get as Kakadu Plum, but not quite as potent. Still amazing though.
* Maca powder is another extraordinary superfood known for its ability to increase libido and in some cases fertility.
So, there you have my secret. Give it a try and let me know what you think!!
