A mattress has an average lifespan of eight years according to the National Sleep Foundation. You may get more or less time depending on the quality and type of mattress that you buy. A high-quality mattress is likely going to last longer.

The type of mattress you buy makes a difference in how long it will last.

Memory Foam Mattresses

The type of material and density of the memory foam will determine how long it will last. Depending on the right care a high-quality memory foam mattress can last 10 to 15 years.

Hybrid Mattresses

These types of mattresses are a mixture of foam and an innerspring mattress. They consist of a layer of foam, coil support system and a top layer of foam. These mattresses do not last as long as other mattresses. On average they last around six years.

Pillowtop Mattresses

A pillowtop mattress gives an extra layer between the mattress and yourself. The extra layer of cushion over time tends to break down leaving an uneven sleeping surface. These mattresses tend to last around four and seven years.

Latex Mattresses

How long a latex mattress will last depends on whether you buy organic or synthetic latex. Some latex mattresses come with warranties for as long as 20 to 25 years according to the Sleep Help Institute.

Waterbed Mattresses

Waterbed mattresses come in either hard or soft side. A soft side waterbed is encased in a foam like box and looks like other traditional mattresses, while the hard side loosk more like the regular vinyl waterbed mattresses. These mattresses can last from five to ten years.

When Should You Replace Your Mattress?

Getting a good night’s sleep is important for optimal health. So many people suffer from a lack of sleep. A study done by the  National Sleep Foundation indicates that 72% of adults have issues with sleeping well. A good place to start in helping with sleep problems is checking if your mattress needs replaced. Here are a few signs to look out for:

Your mattress is over 7 to 10 years old
Most mattresses have a typical lifespan of eight years, depending on the mattress type, care of the mattress, manufacturer, how you sleep, if you sleep alone or with a partner. If you are a larger than average person your mattress will likely wear out sooner than the guidelines from the manufacturer.

As with any product you buy, mattresses will not last forever. A lesser quality product does not last as long especially given excessive wear and tear. Even high-quality mattresses have a maximum set life span.

The mattress has become saggy
If you notice a dent in the bed from where you have laid that is a sign it is time to replace your mattress. Sagging of a mattress can happen with almost any mattress. This happens under the sleep area and along the edges. The deeper the sag that has formed in your mattress the more discomfort you will feel. The sag in your mattress will cause aches and pains as well as a disruption of your sleep.

Your spine is not aligned while you sleep
If your mattress is not giving you the proper alignment and support while you sleep you will not be getting the best sleep you can. For those that sleep on your stomach or back, you should notice your spine’s natural S curve when you are laying down. If you find it is flattened, the mattress is not working to align your spine properly. For you who are side sleepers if you have proper support, your spine should be straight from the neck to the bottom. If you are able to slide a hand between your body and mattress, this is a red flag that you need a different mattress.

Your mattress does not feel comfortable
This one sounds like common sense but many people simply adjust to discomfort. If you find yourself getting better sleep at a hotel or a friend’s house chances are your mattress needs replaced.

You wake up stiff with body aches
If you find yourself waking up every day with pain and aches your mattress is likely the problem. If your pain is worse when you first wake up and subsides as the day goes by this is a sign that your mattress is the cause of your pain.  The Kovacs Foundation did a study that shows that a medium-firm mattress is best for chronic back pain.

Increase of allergies or asthma
If there is no other explanation and it is not allergy season your mattress could be the culprit to your worsening asthma or allergy symptoms. Dust mites found in your mattress can cause allergic reactions and asthma attacks. It is important to flip your mattress, vacuum and steam it to reduce dust mites. You have gained or lost weight
For people who have lost or gained a significant amount of weight might see a change in the difference of their mattress. Someone heavier likely will have more wear and tear on the cushioning, foam and the springs. A Canadian study has linked both inadequate and excessive sleep with weight gain. How you sleep and how much you weigh are related.

Shopping for a new mattress
When shopping to replace your mattress look for a mattress that gives you the proper support you need and feels comfortable to you.
