The Arts District is on fire when it comes to vegan options. In a few blocks, there’s an abundance of restaurants offering vegan dishes from the all-vegan Tacotarian to pop-ups like Paradise City Creamery at Garagiste. One of the newer restaurants in 18B is Main St. Provisions, and when it comes to vegan options, they’ve got guests covered.
Helmed by acclaimed chef Justin Kingsley Hall, with executive sous chef Jessica Perlstein backing him up, Main St. Provisions is where vegans can head for modern American comfort food in the Arts District. Dishes here are seasonable and responsibly sourced.
The mid-century modern-inspired restaurant on Main St. offers vegan options for every course from appetizer to dessert.
The team here is knowledgeable about vegan options. In fact, Perlstein was one of the participants at the second Vegans, Baby James Beard dinner in New York and Las Vegas in 2019.
Dishes that are plant-based are marked as such on the menu to make it easy. Many of the dishes are also available for the restaurant’s brunch on Sundays.
Vegan options at Main St. Provisions — small plates
No matter what you do, start your meal with fry bread and the baba-choke-ganoush and hominy hummus. The smokey baba-choke-ganoush features wood-roasted artichokes and pairs gorgeously with the puffy fried bread. For something a little lighter, there’s the hominy hummus as well as preserved asparagus and olive oil.
Next, there’s the leek empanada. The Colombian-style empanada comes filled with leeks and kale and features a charred tomato and legume sauce for dipping.
Main St. Provisions is home to some of the best salads we’ve ever had. If you want to try something different, order the simple pickles with greens. It’s made with baby gem leaves, sweet pickled peppers and cucumbers and a mustard vinaigrette. Together, it’s what salad dreams are made of.
Another vegan salad at Main St. Provisions is the spring greens salad. Desert Bloom provides the vibrant mixed greens. Plus, the smokey salad has pickled asparagus, brussel sprout leaves, fried onions and herbs tossed in a artichoke vinaigrette.
We’re serious when we say we’d come here for the salad and fry bread alone.
Vegan main dishes
With the menu being seasonal, expect the main dishes to rotate. There was the Carolina BBQ yam with beets that was filling and flavored perfectly this winter. Now, they’re serving fried, breaded avocado with oat milk grits in a roasted mushroom gravy with Carolina mustard BBQ sauce for dippin’.
There are plenty of vegan options at Main St. Provisions when it comes to sides. In fact, a majority of the sides at Main St. Provisions are vegan. The roasted harissa carrots served with tomatillo sauce, crispy greens and pepitas is a dish we’re obsessed with. It’s got a kick that we dig.
If you’re looking for something on the pickling side, which the restaurant does incredibly well, order the Radish & Green Things. Pickled and roasted radishes sauteed with asparagus and brussels sprouts make up this dish. Lemon zest, garlic confit and mixed herbs finish the dish.
Finally, there’s oat milk grits with roasted peanuts and garlic chive olive oil.
Whatever you do, save room for dessert. Main St. has a three-scoop sundae courtesy of Paradise City Creamery that comes topped with whip, chocolate flakes and more.
Wash it down
Aside from the eats, Main St. Provisions also has a fun cocktail program. Try drinks like the Harvey Dent with St .George green chili vodka, Lillet and Chef’s pickled radish “magic”.
