King’s volunteerism leads to Young Farmer award

A passion for agriculture technology and related leadership involvements have helped a Michigan young farmer secure one of Michigan Farm Bureau’s top honors.

St. Joseph County’s Loren King was recently selected as the organization’s Excellence in Agriculture Award winner, in part for his work creating the National FFA Blue Room.

“It’s kind of like a TEDX stage where speakers from all over will come,” he explains.  “There was a NASA commissioner of some type who spoke about ag in space, people from Corteva and large ag companies, and small ag companies will go up and talk about the latest advancements at National FFA Convention.”

He says that content is then turned into lesson plans for agriscience teachers on ag technology.

King tells Brownfield advancing ag technology education access also was a focus of his undergraduate research at Michigan State University and part of his role as a digital media manager for an agricultural startup.

“There are real areas of opportunities related to the communication of tools and the communication of ideas and practices both from companies to farmers and more importantly, from farmers to companies,” he shares.

Today King is the social media specialist for Neogen and remains involved in his family’s corn and soybean farm.
