This Healthy Chocolate Chip Mug Cake For One Recipe is a delicious low-calorie dessert that you can make in just a few minutes!
As much as I love making a bunch of small changes to make my meals healthier, dessert tends to be the course I leave alone.
And so many healthified treats just lose their treatness with all of the healthy changes.
If I’m going to eat cake, I want it to taste sweet, decadent, and delicious, not…well, like kale.
Obviously, any time you use healthier ingredients, you can’t expect it to taste exactly like the original version, but I was pretty impressed with this one!
I already love mug cakes because they are quick, easy, and can be made one serving at a time.
I ate quite a few of them on my weight loss journey!
If you are making cake one serving at a time, you are much less likely to binge eat 8 servings at a time (believe me, I’ve been there…you can read about my 100-pound weight loss journey here).
And then each serving you make is freshly “baked” and warm, which makes it taste all that much better.
So, I set out to work to create a low-calorie mug cake that actually tasted good…and I believe I’ve done it!
How To Make The Healthy Chocolate Chip Mug Cake
First, grab your mug. I recommend going bigger rather than smaller with mug cakes. They tend to rise as they “bake” in the microwave then fall again as they cool afterward, but you want to make sure there is enough room for the rising without it spilling over.
This mug I used is 14.6oz.
Now, pour all of the dry ingredients (the flour, salt, sugar, & baking powder) into your mug and stir it together with a spoon.
Next, add in your wet ingredients to your mug (the unsweetened applesauce, milk, and vanilla extract).
*Quick Tip – I always keep the individual cups of unsweetened applesauce on-hand for healthy baking. Each cup is 1/2 cup of applesauce. I find when I buy the larger containers, I often don’t eat it all in time and end up wasting, so the little cups are perfect!
Now, stir it all up and it’s almost ready to go.
Stir in the mini chocolate chips.
You could use full-size chocolate chips, but I wouldn’t. The mini ones are just small enough to be able to mix evenly throughout your cake, providing perfect little pockets of sweetness.
Now, microwave your mug cake for 70 seconds. Now, our microwave is 1000 watts and 70 seconds is perfect, but all microwaves cook a bit differently, so you may need to do a little trial and error to find the perfect time for you.
The top of your cake should look set (not wet), like in the photo below.
It’s ready to eat right out of the microwave (though I would wait a minute or so as to not burn your mouth!), but if you want to be extra fancy, you can add a little dollop of whipped cream and a few extra mini chocolate chips.
This cake is absolutely amazing eaten warm (I’ve never eaten it cold, so I can’t vouch for that)!
It’s fluffy, melty, chocolatey and all of the things you want in a dessert.

- 3 Tbs white whole wheat flour
- 1/8 tsp salt
- 1 Tbs sugar
- 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1 Tbs unsweetened applesauce
- 3 Tbs skim milk
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 Tbs mini chocolate chips
In a large mug, mix together dry ingredients – flour, salt, sugar, and baking powder.
Add applesauce, skim milk, and vanilla to the mug and mix well.
Stir in chocolate chips.
Microwave for 70 seconds (in our 1000 watt microwave). The top should look set.
Cool briefly before eating.
