Haney on Canada Now – RealAgriculture

Recently, RealAgriculture’s founder Shaun Haney joined Jeff Sammut, host of the program Canada Now on Sirius XM’s Canada Talks channel, to talk about the upcoming election from an agriculture perspective.

One of the main questions was: have those that are running for the Prime Minister’s office done enough to appeal to those that grow or process food?

The rural vote, or the agricultural vote, if you look at the last election a few years ago is pretty much a “blue wave” voting conservative, and Haney doesn’t expect that to be different in this election.

“Agriculture is in a tough spot. A Liberal government knows that no matter what they do, they aren’t likely to gain a lot of votes in these areas. And from the Conservative side, it’s like ‘we can do whatever we want to agriculture, because we just know no matter what happens, they are going to vote for us anyways.’ I’m broad brushing this, but it’s sort of a description of what we’ve seen in Alberta over the last two elections,” he explains, adding the Conservative platform is the most detailed on the agricultural front, often because they have more MP’s sitting in rural areas.

The duo discuss rural internet access, red tape, the portrayal of agriculture in politics, and more.
