Ocean Letter Sounds Matching Activity

Learning to isolate phonemes in words is a critical literacy skill in kindergarten and first grade. This phonemic awareness skill helps students differentiate the sounds letters make. With this knowledge, they’ll be better able to decode words and blend sounds together in CVC words and other words.

This digital ocean themed letter sounds matching activity offers a ton of fun and skill practice for your students. This activity is the perfect addition to literacy centers, technology centers, or any summer themed unit.

If you don’t have access to printables and letter cards, this activity is a great alternative. Plus, it still incorporates fine motor skills as students drag and drop the digital sea creatures on the slides.

Students will work on isolating beginning, middle, and ending sounds using kid-friendly pictures. This makes the activity a great independent learning activity for students.

Working on Letter Sounds Recognition

As students work on upper and lowercase letter recognition, it’s important that they practice identifying the sounds of the letters too. This will help them pick out the sounds in words and begin to read.

This letter sounds matching game allows students to isolate sounds at the beginning, middle, and ending of words. There are 5 slides in all covering the various sounds. There are 3 beginning sounds ocean slides, 1 middle sound slide, and 1 ending sound slide. Each slide has 9 pictures. This gives students 45 different opportunities to practice their letter sounds skills.

On each of the digital ocean slides, students will look at the picture and determine the beginning, middle, or ending sound. Then, they’ll find the matching lowercase sea creature letter. The children will match the letter to the picture by dragging and dropping it to cover the picture. They’ll continue until all of the pictures have been matched with a letter.

The directions remain the same for each digital slide, so students can feel confident completing this on their own or at home.

Different Ways to Use the Activity

There are many ways to use this digital activity to meet the needs of your students and your schedule.

With 3 different types of sounds included, your students can focus on one sound at a time. They can also practice with the specific sound they’re needing the most support with. If your students are doing well with letter sound recognition, they can mix and match the slides, practicing all of them.

As they progress, they can add in more slides, working up to completing all 5. You can easily group students based on the sound they need to practice and assign certain slides that way, deleting the slides you don’t want them to practice yet. Next time, you can reassign the activity keeping those slides included or reorder them for more of a challenge.

Students can also complete this activity with a partner. They can work on their own device to see who can get a Bingo first, with either 3 in a row or a complete board. This adds an extra layer of excitement to the activity.

To further challenge students, they can write the uppercase and lowercase letter of each sound on a whiteboard or piece of paper as they practice. They can even write the word that matches the picture on their whiteboard or paper.
