Did you know that you can make your own mouthwash at home? It’s just one of many personal care products that you can easily make using ingredients that you may even already have in the pantry.

Making products at home gives you control over the ingredients so you can avoid harsh chemicals that you may not want on or in your body. It also helps you avoid buying products in packaging that is often unrecyclable, so it ends up in overflowing landfills, potentially harming the soil or even making its way to our oceans.

Here are some tried and tested mouthwash recipes that are easy to make, use natural ingredients, and offer real benefits to your oral health. You’ll also find they cost less than packaged mouthwashes and that making them yourself gives you a special kind of satisfaction that you just can’t put a price tag on.

Mint and Clove Mouthwash

You’ve probably noticed that the majority of packaged mouthwashes advertise a minty flavor. From peppermint to spearmint to “icy mint,” mint is a no-brainer for fresh breath. You may also see clove- or cinnamon-flavored mouthwash. Clove has natural anti-inflammatory properties that can help with gum irritation. And cinnamon has antimicrobial benefits that may help fight cavities and other oral problems.

To make this refreshing rinse, you will need one teaspoon each of whole cloves and ground cinnamon, a few drops of peppermint essential oil, and a cup of water. Boil all these ingredients together and then allow them to infuse for 10 minutes before straining the mixture. You can then pour your mouthwash into a bottle, secure the lid, and refrigerate. Use within two weeks and remake as needed!

Anti-Inflammatory Mouthwash

There are several reasons why you may be experiencing inflammation of the gums. Gingival diseases, plaque accumulation, and even hormonal changes can cause these soft tissues to swell and, at times, bleed. Here is a recipe for a natural mouthwash that will help you combat gum inflammation.

You will need a cup of distilled water, a teaspoon of salt, and two teaspoons of baking soda. Bring the water to a boil and then remove from heat. Once it has cooled down a little, add the salt and baking soda and stir until they are well combined. Pour the mouthwash into a clean bottle and refrigerate.
